Estes to surpass 14,000 doors in 2026

Less-than-truckload carrier Estes Express Lines expanded its door count nearly 9% last year, opening four new terminals, expanding four locations and relocating 12 facilities. The company said Thursday it will have over 14,000 doors by the end of 2026.

 

U.S. Bank and DAT Freight & Analytics partner up for new quarterly rates-focused research report

  • spot rates rose 3.0% in October and then fell 1.1% to $1.65 per mile in November;
  • contract rates were steady in recent months and came in at $2.02 in November;
  • spot and contract rates increased less than 1% annually; and
  • fuel surcharges were up 7.5% in November, even though national diesel prices fell, which the report said highlights how fuel surcharges do not always track pump prices in real time

Inventory drop-off drives down Logistics Manager’s Index

2026 AV bill a game changer for heavy trucking

U.S. Reps. Bob Latta, R-Ohio, and Debbie Dingell, D-Mich., released this week a discussion draft of a new bill, “Safely Ensuring Lives Future Deployment and Research in Vehicle Evolution (SELF DRIVE) Act” of 2026, the first federal statute – if enacted – aimed at advancing AV safety.

The bipartisan bill moves to dismantle regulatory roadblocks that have kept autonomous freight in a perpetual “testing” phase by allowing limited commercial operations while trucks are evaluated during their pilot stage.

Layoff pace in December hit lowest level since mid-2024, Challenger says

Planned job cuts totaled 35,553 for the month, a 50% slide from November and an 8% decrease from the same period a year ago and the lowest since July 2024.

Still, for the full year, employers announced more than 1.2 million cuts, up 58% from a year ago and the highest level since the pandemic year of 2020.
