Some LTL tonnage improves, but carriers report mixed freight performance

Heavier freight and higher volumes benefited some carriers, perhaps overlapping with positive manufacturing sentiment in the first few months of the year, a notable shift from 2025.

Despite a surge in the previous week due to end-of-month shipments, dry van load post volumes saw an 8% decrease last week to start March. Concurrently, equipment posts also dropped by 6%. As a result of these shifts, the national load-to-truck ratio slightly decreased, settling at 8.10 last week.

With oil and gasoline prices seeing significant increases since the recently-launched joint strikes by the United States and Israel less than two weeks ago, in an initiative geared towards halting Iran’s development of nuclear weapons, the national diesel average, for the week of May 9, came in at $4.859 per gallon, marking a $1.277 annual gain and an $0.855 gain compared to the same week in 2024.

Fleet owner guilty of defrauding Amazon out of $3.5M
